We are just back from Pasadena, CA and our hosting duties of the Tournament of Roses Parade on RFD-TV.  So, allow us to wish you a belated Happy New Year!  Charlie and I didn't really have an official New Year's Eve celebration because we were asleep!
When your call time to be at work is 2 am, the last thing you want to be doing is hootin' and hollerin' with a glass of champagne in your hand two hours before!  Let me begin our first-hand report by saying, having watched the Rose Parade since I was a kid, actually being there was a tremedous thrill.  Thinking back, the Rose Parade was the first thing I ever saw in color on a color TV!  So I can say I've come full circle!
Hosting the parade telecast was such fun, but required a ton of preparation.  There were 89 float, marching band, and equine entries and we had to know detailed information about all of them. Our broadcast notebooks were over 300 pages!!  What I love about this parade is the fact that every single entry that travels down the 5 1/2 mile parade route has a special meaning that Charlie and I were able to convey to the viewing audience.  For instance, our own RFD-TV float not only celebrated the famous Hee Haw series that now airs on the network, but also honored American farmers and ranchers and celebrated America as "the world's bread basket".
You mentioned the long parade route.  Imagine being in one of the marching bands!  You really have to hand it to those youngsters who not only march but play instruments for the more than 1 million people gathered along the streets.  And let's keep in mind another obstacle.  There were lots of horses in the parade, leaving "band bombs" along the way, if you get my drift!  Seriously, you have to salute everyone involved in the 120 year tradition... the officials, all the volunteers, and our crew.  They made it a memorable experience for all.  Check out a few of the photos we brought back for you!
